Android selling more handsets than iPhone and BlackBerry in 2Q 2010?

According to the NPD research group, Android phones were the best selling retail smartphones in 2Q 2010. This marks the first time since 1997 that RIM’s BlackBerry was not the top selling smartphone brand. It should be noted though that this was a period when apple and RIM were getting ready to launch their newest handsets, the iPhone 4 and BlackBerry Torch respectively. Die hard fans of those brands may have been holding off for the next refresh. It will be interesting to see what happens in 3Q when all three smartphone operating systems have new handsets out. Nevertheless it shows a definite Android surge and possibly a strength in Google’s strategy of multiple vendors that can continually grab attention the whole year round. It looks like the Summer of 2010 is really the summer of Android
